Learn your way around Crossword
Read the aim of Crossword, then make your first move. Fill every open square so the intersecting Across and Down answers match their clues. Keep the game area visible while you use its controls. Check the rule that explains your first action. Check the relevant rule before repeating a move.
Solve 24 connected 15×15 layouts with 11–20 entries each. Use the original English clues and scroll the board on narrow screens; completed layouts may appear again.
Bring this focus to a round
Watch the feedback after an action. A message can explain whether the input was accepted or whether a rule needs attention. Keep the objective visible.
What you need to achieve
Fill every open square so the intersecting Across and Down answers match their clues. The feedback beside the game helps you follow the round. The example below illustrates a decision.
The playing sequence
- Choose a numbered Across or Down clue to highlight its answer.
- Select a square and type a letter, or use the on-screen alphabet.
- Shared letters belong to both crossing answers. Selecting a shared square twice changes direction.
- Use Check entries to review entered letters. Reveal selected supplies one letter and counts as help.
- Complete every open square to solve the puzzle. Dark squares are not filled.
Keyboard and screen controls
Select a clue or square. Use your physical keyboard or the on-screen letters, Erase, Check entries and Reveal selected. Scroll within the board on a narrow screen. On a smaller screen, keep the active part of the board within view. Read the example below alongside these instructions.
Work through an example
For the clue “A shape with three sides”, the answer is TRIANGLE. It occupies 8 squares, and each crossing uses the same letter. Your next round may have a different position, so inspect it before acting. Take a moment to compare.
Avoid this misunderstanding
Do not fill dark squares. A letter that fits one answer must also fit the crossing clue. Compare the situation with the worked example. Keep the stated aim separate from side details such as animation or appearance. Progress is measured by the game’s own completion or scoring rules.
